...scanning my life away

Factoids:

  • This is my 22nd year of teaching.

  • I have accumulated a huge number of files in that period of time.

  • Cleaning out said files is a enormous job.

  • Personal scanners are relatively inexpensive.

  • Thumb drives hold many, many, many files in an itty-bitty space.

Questions to ask myself:

  • Have I used this material in the past 1, 2, 5, 10, or 2o years?

  • Even if I have, is it worth the time it will take to scan it?

  • How easily can I acquire the same or similar material online?

(I was sure that a scanner was the answer to my dilemma about what to do with my files. Now I'm not so sure. Oh dear.)

Oh! My dear. Downsizing is scary, unsettling. <3

WV - as I cackle until I nearly wet myself - unhumm! I rest my case. :~}

Leslie, it's feeling like a huge job, but one that must be done. I haven't used much of the materials in my files for years, but instead dip into them for ideas. It's a daunting task to decide what to toss, what to scan, and what to keep in physical form. I shall persevere! (A good pants-wetting cackle is sometimes just what's needed to get through the rough spots!)

You can do anything 15 minutes at a time, or you can wait for my arrival next month and we can 15 it then. You scan, I shred. :)

According to my husband a person only really needs about 5% of the paper they have. So 95% can just be thrown away. The 5% you really need you can always get a copy of from somebody else, so you can scrap that too. I know there are faults in this logic, I just don't know what they are. ;)

Janie, I think Chris is probably right. I've been tossing like crazy. More of a security thing to know that I have "my files."

Arlene, I'm not sure I want to use our short amount of time together on this! We'll see how much I get done in the next 3 weeks. :-)

Oh, I feel your pain. I moved classrooms 3 times in 10 years, then finally out into other positions -- nothing like changing grades and moving buildings to make me clean out the files!
