...finding balance

Anyone who has been reading my blog since September knows that this is an incredibly busy school year for me, a fact that I've whined more than enough about. To keep my sanity and feel like I'm still in control of my life I carve out little bits of time to sew. Sewing takes me away from it all like nothing else does.

These two projects went into the mail to Katie yesterday. In December she mused that it would be fun to have colorful aprons to wear to work on the holidays, instead of boring, everyday black. (She works at a small family-owned Scottish pub, not a chain, so some independence is allowed.)

Next up: The last time I saw her my favorite three year old put in a request for a new apron with pink bunnies. I can't wait to get started.

...gingerbread houses

When the kids were small one of our Christmas traditions was to make a gingerbread house. Somewhere around the teenage years when sports ruled our lives, spending time and money on this activity somehow lost their appeal. Last night Katie and I were at loose ends--shopping and wrapping complete, friends too busy to socialize--what to do, what to do...

We popped in "Elf," scrounged around for gingerbread house building materials, poured a little wine, and....voila! Not quite as elaborate as they used to be, but they turned out pretty cute, all the same. A delightful evening.

...visitors, a new camera, and family heirlooms

Nate is home from Alaska, so he and Genavieve came for a visit this past weekend.
We went camera shopping (since mine went sploosh! in the toilet last summer and sealing it in a bag of rice didn't totally revive it), went out to eat at Ice Harbor Brew Pub,
and had fun being silly, as usual.
Sunday morning mom and dad stopped by to have lunch (for them) and breakfast (for us). They were returning from their annual trek to AZ and CA and miniature shows. Coming home they stopped in Portland to visit mom's sister, Aunt Nanie, who sent them on their way with two large boxes full of Grandma Irene's cosmos glass collection. (Mom had called me a few days before and asked if I was interested in having it. Of course! Arlene and I thought the pieces had already been sold to a collecter.) So after breakfast/lunch the table was cleared and mom unpacked the boxes. Wow. Wow. I remembered that grandma had a lot of pieces, but I sure didn't expect there to be so much! Mom said that none of Nanie's kids wanted them (I have a theory about that) and she was glad that I did. She stipulated that I not sell the pieces (I won't) but didn't say anything about gifting them. It sure will be fun sharing with my sisters, daughter and nieces!
(The large lamp with the chimney is mine, a Christmas gift a few years ago from mom and dad because I liked Grandma's so much. I brought it out to compare to the other one. They're the same, except for the color at the top.) Arlene, let me know what to set aside for you! :-)

...a day with Cristian

My godson Cristian and I had a date yesterday.
We loaded our bikes in the back of my truck and set off for the Tri-Cities. First stop--Kohl's, to find a pair of jeans for school. Score! Next--a park by the river with access to the paved trail system. We rode for a few miles, stopping to give Cristian's legs a break every now and then. I got a few pictures before my camera met a soggy end. (It was in my shorts pocket because I was on my mountain bike and wearing street clothes--no jersey with a handy pocket on the back. Potty break...camera in toilet...augh!) After riding a while we drove over to Pasco to the Sacagawea State Park and wandered through the nice little museum there. Lots of hands-on displays that appeal to almost-10 year old boys. (Just how much power does it take to pull the arrow back on the bow? Can you imagine doing this and staying steady enough to hit your target??) After the museum we took a wrong turn and had an adventure in driving. I told Cristian tales about my own kids getting so worried when I'd get us lost when they were young. We finally figured out where we were, got turned around, and headed back to civilization for a late lunch. Then we checked out the movie theater to see what was playing. (Not much that appeals to both a boy and a middle aged woman. What a relief that GI Joe wasn't playing!) We agreed on G Force but it didn't start for an hour, so off to Barnes and Nobles to wander and look at books. I haven't been in the children's section for a long time, so that was a treat. Then, off to the movies with our 3D glasses. That was pretty cool, even though the story line was lame. After that it was time to go home....we did the math and realized my old dog had been inside for 8 hours. How time flies! It was a fun day with a great kid. Katie wonders how much longer Cristian will want to hang out with me. Hard to say....but I'm game as long as he is!
